Hey there, fellow writers! We’ve all been there—staring at a blank screen, the cursor blinking mockingly back at us. Yup, we’re talking about writer’s block. It’s like the party crasher nobody invited. Lucky for us, Reva Harris, a writing powerhouse with 15 years of experience, has shared some killer tips to help us kick writer’s block to the curb. Reva’s got a knack for collaborating with experts, especially in the nursing field, and she’s practically a magician when it comes to getting those creative juices flowing. So, let’s dive into her top strategies!
About Reva Harris
Reva is a copywriter and content marketer who specializes in helping B2B brands reach their audiences with the right message. As the principal of
Reva Writes, she develops engaging, insightful content for companies in the SaaS, A/E/C, and Human Resources sectors.
Her experience includes overhauling the B2B content strategy at Purchasing Power, a fast-growing employee benefit provider. She also oversaw marketing communications for LeaseQuery during a period in which the accounting software company grew by 708%. In 2019, she launched Reva Writes to take her talents on the road. She is also a B2B copywriting expert for MarketingProfs.
Because today’s B2B marketing engine depends on content, Reva works with companies, agencies, and consultants to build brand awareness, establish authority, and deepen engagement with prospects and customers. She specializes in what she calls “unsexy” industries. Many of her clients are the kinds of businesses that we interact with every day, but are completely unaware of. One day, she may be writing a blog on funding for infrastructure projects. The next day, she may be brainstorming a multi-channel campaign for small business insurance.
The consistent through-line in everything she does is her knack for working with subject matter experts to zero in on messaging that audiences can easily digest and marketers can harness to drive conversions.
Reva is a rare native of Atlanta, Georgia, where she lives with her two cats.
Strategies for Beating Writer’s Block
Free Writing
Let’s start with one of my faves: free writing. The idea is simple—just write whatever pops into your head. Don’t stress about grammar or whether it even makes sense. This is like a brain-decluttering exercise. You’ll be surprised how often gems are hiding beneath the clutter. Just let it all out and see what surfaces!
Visualization
This one’s about mindset. Picture yourself writing with ease, words flowing like a breeze. Or imagine your audience loving every word you’ve written. Visualization can seriously boost your confidence and push that block right out of your way. It’s all about being your own cheerleader!
Write by Hand
Ditch the laptop for a bit and grab a notebook. Seriously! There’s something about pen and paper that frees up your mind. Try doodling, sketching diagrams, or jotting down thoughts in bullet points. It can be surprisingly refreshing and might just knock loose a stubborn block.
Out-of-Order Writing
Who says you’ve got to write from start to finish? Skip around! If a juicy ending or an attention-grabbing intro comes to mind, go with that. There are no rules saying we’ve gotta be linear thinkers when crafting our first drafts.
Read for Inspiration
Sometimes the best way to kick-start your writing is to read. Find articles or books related to your topic. This can spark new ideas or even show you what to avoid. Plus, being a good reader usually makes you a better writer—so dive into someone else’s work and let it inspire yours!
Set Small Goals
Let’s face it, tackling an entire manuscript can seem daunting. Instead, set small, manageable goals. Write a paragraph, then a page—baby steps really count. Achieving these tiny milestones can keep your motivation high and those creative wheels turning.
Reva’s experience lies in what some might call the “unsexy” B2B sectors like construction and sustainability. But her secret sauce is talking to passionate experts in these fields. Their enthusiasm can turn any dry topic into an exciting story waiting to be told.
Remember, writing isn’t just a talent—it’s a skill. The more you write and push through those blocks, the better you’ll get. Give these tips a try and see which ones work for you. Keep at it, and happy writing!
