How to Build Your Clientele

1. Ask for referrals, don’t wait for them. Referrals are the most obvious and well-known ways to get new clients. However, too many health writers are waiting for clients to fall in their lap. In reality, those former clients can be busy and won’t go out in their way, so, instead of waiting, take action. Email them at least 2 happy former clients and ask for referrals.

2. Browse Job Boards. This is a no brainer, and chances are you are already using job boards. If you don’t, you should bookmark some! This is one of the easiest ways to build your clientele. These boards can often include marketing, copywriting, and more. A lot of opportunities cover remote, part-time, contract, or full-time. (Craigslist, Indeed, Local Nonprofit Chamber Board, Virtual Vocations)

3. Follow-up with Lost Clients. When I say “lost client,” I’m referring to clients you’ve talked about in the past or sent a suggestion to, but didn’t win business. Start a new conversation about hiring you, send them a follow-up email asking how their projects are coming up, and if there is anything you can do for them.

4. Follow-up with Your Network. Ask writing colleagues, connections, or people you have talked to in the past. Grab the opportunity to tell them what you’re up to and you’ll appreciate a referral. 

5. Guest Blogging. This is a great strategy to let your prospective clients see how you can give value to your readers by tapping someone else’s audience. 

6. Twitter Search. A powerful way to find real-time tweets from people and companies who are looking for a health writer. Use appropriate keywords or phrases. I’ll bet you discover some potential clients and projects.

7. Network Online and Offline. Instead of seating in front of your computer the whole week, how about planning to go to a meet-up, workshop, or networking events and meet with people who are the “connector” to refer you to prospective clients they know? Always update your LinkedIn profile and don’t forget to share your work too! It’s a tested and proven way to easily build your clientele.

8. Create a Package Services. A wonderful way to let your client know all the services you offer. Bundle your services that clients can book with predictable and recurring revenue. 

9. Start Co-working. Build a strong connection with people who are in your co-working space. You can find a co-working space by searching on Google!

10. Always offer Advice in Health. This is a long term strategy to find new clients, help people who are connected to a prospective client. Offer ideas, introduction, or help them in any way with their business. Building relationships over time will always pay off. 

11. Send Hand Written Note. This is a nice personal touch which lets people know that you truly care. 

12. Answer Questions on Quora. Find questions, then write thoughtful answers, and link to your portfolio website. Do this a few times a week and you’ll be surprised by the connection you will make. 

13. Create a Presentation. Make an engaging presentation and this on your LinkedIn profile for social shares and new leads.

14. Write a Guide. You can showcase your expertise on a specific topic with this guide to drive traffic and capture leads.

15. Case Study. This can show a prospective client your results. 

16. Speaking on Local Events. A great way to attract some visibility. Reach out to organizers about speaking and backup it up with your skills. 

17. Create Your Own Seo Strategy. This is a long-term strategy to drive targeted traffic to your own company website but consistency is the key.

18. Partner with None Competing Colleagues. Look for these people and offer your services as an expansion of their business.
